Writing our chapter in chocolate’s history.

Some speculate the origins of chocolate go back as many as 2,000 years. Cacao has been used throughout history as medicine, currency, ceremonial accessory, an expression of love, and to simply excite the senses.

The unadulterated form of cacao- before the inclusion of sugars or other ingredients- is a healthful substance. It’s full of antioxidants, healing properties, and natural immune-boosting elements.

Our hope is to write a meaningful chapter of our own in chocolate’s rich history. There’s a community of like-minded chocolate makers across the world who are determined to create a product in line with its origins and historical significance. We’re grateful to be part of this community and to bring it home to Atlantic Beach.

Globally sourced. Locally crafted.

There’s a sweet spot on Earth where cacao is grown- roughly 10 degrees from the equator. Though this may seem narrow, this means that the world’s best cacao can be sourced from geographically diverse locations like Belize, Hawaii, Brazil, Uganda, Vietnam, and more. Each location, though similar in climates, has its own signature. For instance, farms in Belize may also include plum trees, coconuts, hearts of palm, and other crops that directly contribute to soil quality and the profile of the cacao.

At Makenu, we underscore the unique characteristics of where our cacao is derived when we make our chocolate. We encourage our customers to explore every bite with wonder and find what makes each bar unique.

You may find a little bit of home in there, too. After all, we can’t resist a bit of citrus zest from time to time.

Expect better.

People are more curious than ever about where their food comes from, and chocolate is no exception. The commercial chocolate supply chain is marred in human rights abuses, and it doesn’t have to be that way.

At Makenu, we work with organizations who support farmers who are using their cacao crop to support their families, who operate sustainably and organically, and who meet our rigorous standards for quality.

Maybe it’s us, but the chocolate tastes a little sweeter when you know it’s done no harm to people or the planet.
